Artist statement

Rijk de Wilde de Ligny, an artist based in Utrecht, the Netherlands. I am interested in exploring the weird, strange complexity of memory and personal stories, through the medium of analogue photography and collage. In my work I reflect an interest in the strange nature of memories and how they are woven into the fabric of our lives.

Analogue photography as a way to create a sense of nostalgia and a connection to the past. The physical limitations of using analogue photography, such as light leaks and grain, let you see a raw and imperfect quality that speaks to the memories. These photographs are the foundation for my collages, which I use to make deep and strange narratives that mix reality and fiction.

Collages are a form of visual storytelling, where I combine images and objects to create dreamlike landscapes that suggest my personal narrative. I use cutting, burning and repositioning images as a metaphor for the way that memories can be broken and rebuilt in our minds. Through my collages, I'm looking to create a place of reflection, where the viewers are invited to view their own experiences and memories.

My work is about capturing the core of a moment, and using it to create a visual story that is both personal and universal. Through my art, I hope to create a link between the viewer and the memories we all have, where the past and the present are combined to create something new and meaningful.
